Worked Debt Repayment Examples
Clear explanations and transparent assumptions for responsible debt planning.
Example 1: Estimate monthly interest
A $12,000 balance at an 18% annual rate has a monthly interest approximation of $12,000 × 0.18 ÷ 12 = $180 for the first month. With a $450 payment, approximately $270 reduces principal in that first modeled month.
The following month starts with a smaller balance, so interest declines if the rate stays constant and no new charges occur. This is why a consistent payment can accelerate repayment over time.
Example 2: Why minimum payments can be slow
A $5,000 balance at 24% APR has an approximate first-month interest charge of $100. A $125 payment would reduce principal by only about $25 that month.
Actual minimum-payment formulas and daily-balance interest vary by issuer. Use a fixed-payment amount above the interest estimate to model a meaningful payoff trajectory.
Example 3: Consolidation fees
Suppose you refinance $15,000 at a new APR of 12% for 48 months, with a 3% origination fee. The fee is $450. If financed, the modeled starting loan principal becomes $15,450.
Compare the resulting payment and total repayment with what you would pay on your existing accounts over a similar period. A lower APR can be offset by a fee or an extended term.
Example 4: Debt-to-income ratio
Monthly required debt payments of $900 divided by gross monthly income of $4,800 equals 0.1875, or 18.75%.
This example is a mathematical ratio, not a lending recommendation. A lender may include other required obligations and apply its own underwriting criteria.
Example 5: Avalanche and snowball ordering
Imagine one debt of $4,000 at 24% APR and another of $7,000 at 12% APR. The avalanche prioritizes the 24% debt; the snowball prioritizes the $4,000 balance. In this case both prioritize the same account.
Change the second debt to $2,000 at 12% and the strategies diverge: avalanche still targets the 24% balance while snowball targets the smaller $2,000 debt. Compare the outputs with the same monthly payment budget.
